Personal Growth

I'm supposed to be working on my CEP 705 class, but I'm sick of Piaget and all his cognitive development theories. And to think, its only week 2. Ughh. This stuff was a lot easier in my undergrad classes.

I'm so over school. Really. My academic drive has virtually disappeared and now all I want to do is have fun. I'm reverting. Although I'm choosing to look at it more as if I am growing socially.

New Photos and Updates

I finished my first graduate course! It was a wintermester course; 3 weeks, 4hrs/day. I'm proud to say that I did not even have to crack the book and I'm pretty confident I got a solid A. I guess I absorbed enough through the 4 hour lectures, but much of that time was spent texting whoever would converse with me. I wish I could say that I'm just a genius, but realistically it was a pretty easy class.

Jake and I went skiing last week up in Tahoe. We took advantage and went on a day when the kids were all at school during the week. All I have to say is skiing is WAY easier than snowboarding. Neither one of us fell (except for when I fell getting off the lift...every time).

Yesterday was my dads 58th birthday. We went out to lunch and then Jake and I took Lexi to meet my friend and her daughter. The little girls bowled (by themselves!) and we watched and talked. Here are a few pictures that we took at my parents house.

Next weekend we are going on our second beer crawl. This time it will be with a huge group; my parents, my brother and sister-in-law, a friend of my moms, our friends, Yvonne and Jason and hopefully a couple other people (ahem, Brandi) . I hope the weather stays nice so that we can enjoy this one as much as we did the last one! I will make sure to post pictures.

Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Discussion

Jacob:
Mom, can I go to after school program next Monday?

Me:
Do you mean Tuesday? Monday is a holiday.

Megan:
Yeah Jacob, its Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Jacob:
What's that?

Megan:
Martin Luther King Jr. made people realize that black people were no different than white people. A long time ago, black kids couldn't go to the same schools, they couldn't use the same bathrooms and they had to ride in the back of the bus. White kids couldn't even talk to black kids.

(Jacob had a complete look of bewilderment at this point)

Me:
Yeah, we were pretty stupid back then, huh? People were really mean to black people and didn't let them do the same things. They could do the same things but they couldn't do them with white people. They had to go to their own schools, their own churches and their own bathrooms. It was equal but separate. MLK made it so everyone gained civil rights. That's when everyone, no matter what, has the right to basic things like education and marriage.

Megan:
Yeah, and a lot of people didn't want that, so then they shot and killed him and he died.
(She then went into detail about when and where this happened)
People were so dumb back then.

Me:
Yeah, but think about what is going on today. Are there any types of people that we treat that way today?

(Megan is thinking.....)

Me:
Think about what I told you about gay people. Do you remember how a lot of people voted to keep them from getting married or from adopting kids? Wouldn't it suck if you were a kid who did not have parents and wanted to be adopted? Wouldn't you rather have two moms or two dads than no mom or dad? We just replaced one group of people to pick with another group, right?

Megan agreed and became somewhat silent. I could tell that I had inspired a deeper thought and she was evaluating what I had told her. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she spent the rest of the day thinking about what I had said.

That being said, isn't it significant that we are getting our first black president the day after MLK day? Lets cross our fingers and hope hes better than our last president. Lets be realistic though, a trained monkey could outperform Bush.

Creationism vs. Evolution

Imagine my horror when I walked into a middle school history class to sub yesterday and found out we'd be watching a black and white movie. Keep in mind, that for me, it would not be just once. I had FIVE history periods that would be watching this. Movies are just not my thing. One or two a year is all I can sit through so you can bet that a black and white film won't even make it on my radar.

I found myself surprised when I realized that I was really getting into it. Its basically about a teacher that gets arrested for teaching evolution, which is against the law in the state at the time. He goes on trial and two prominent attorneys put this bible thumping town on the map. Apparently it is based on a true story. I only got to see the first half, but I found the entire movie on youtube (granted, it was in 13 ten minute segments, but it was better than going out and renting it) so Jake and I watched it together.

Whether you are a creationist or an evolutionist, the movie makes some very impressive points. You might ask why a teacher would be showing such a film in a history class. Well, I have no idea. All I know is that they were going to debate it on Tuesday. Sounds like she treading a fine line there.

Vintage TV

Shows that should've never ended:

3rd Rock from the Sun - I definately appreciate the humor in this show now that Im a little older. Dick, Harry, Sally and Tommy managed to turn everyday human oddities into humor

Frasier - I think only people with higher than average IQ's appreciate this show. Niles was hands down the best character.

Swingtown - So this show only lasted 5 or 6 episodes, but it was quite intriguing to follow the life of a 70's swinger couple. There was a teeny little part of me that thought...hmmmm, not such a bad idea! Joking, people!!

The PJ's - The most inappropriate stereotypical cartoon about the projects ever. HUD lady, haiti lady, smokey the crackhead, Thurgood the "supe" are just some of the claymation characters. But Eddie Murphy created it, so its technically ok for me to enjoy it, right?


Star Trek The Next Generation - I'm not a die hard trekkie, but TNG was the best. Voyager is a distant second but the rest are far far suckier.
