I was reading the news this morning (as I always do) and found that Ms. California made the front page in almost all the media outlets. First of all, I have to give her props. She stood up for what she believed in, knowing how unpopular it was among the target audience, judges and not to mention 48% of Californians. That takes a lot of you-know-what.
It kind of got me thinking about her statement 'I was raised that marriage is between a man and a woman' and I found myself correlating my current cognitive and moral development course with real world situations (whoa! I'm actually learning!). Many psychologists and researchers in the field have suggested that people operate at different stages of moral development. This is not to say our morals are better or worse, they are just more developed. Its complicated and requires much more than a few paragraphs to explain, but basically the beginning stages entail a black and white perspective and then move on to eye for an eye. The consensus is that the higher the level of moral development, the more tolerant one is of others and their choices. It is also characterized by individualization and the intense scrutinization of social norms. In other words, instead of merely accepting "because this is how its always been, this is the way it should always be" one begins to question and make ones own decisions by critical self-investigations.
I guess what I am saying is that Ms. California obviously hasn't reached that level of moral development yet. Others are doing the thinking for her. And her boobs are taking care of eliminating any other thinking she may encounter.

In all fairness to her, she did say that "for her" marriage should be between men and women. She didn't actually say that her answer should be adopted by all people.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, I say kudos to her for stating her real opinion, regardless of whether or not I actually agree with her. I think that's the point that most people are missing, and Perez Hilton's name-calling shows that he's as close-minded as he believes her to be.
And come on, Laura, you're not one to judge a woman simply for the size of her breasts. It's totally sexist to say that a woman can't have brains if she has boobs.
I'm partly in agreement. Ms. California had every right to answer the question honestly. Its refreshing when someone in the spotlight answers truthfully and directly, rather than giving neutral semi-answers. And I agree, Perez Hilton is being a baby. He didn't get the answer he wanted, so now he is out to bash her.
ReplyDeleteThe point I was trying to make is that the only reasoning she provided for her stance on the matter was 'because thats the way I was raised'. Basically someone told her what was RIGHT, she accepted and moved on. I was attempting to relate that to the theories on moral development.
As for the sexist comment, pageants rank right up there. You can't tell me that they are ranking these women on their personalities, brains or talent. Its all about their abs and boobs. Its not to say these women don't have brains, but if youre going to focus on something for a pageant, you're not going to put a whole lot of energy into increasing your IQ when you know the focus will be elsewhere.
